Created by Belgium's most rebellious designer, Ann Demeulemeester's eponymous brand arrived on the scene in 1986 with a ready-to-wear collection. It wasn't until 1988 that an accessories and footwear range appeared, and it was 1992 before it hit the catwalks of Paris. Punk-rock had re-emerged at this time, and its influence can still be found today in looks that are both androgynous and romantic, where black and white lead the way. Strong pieces are key, following in the footsteps of Ann Demeulemeester's muse - her great friend, Patti Smith. When it comes to footwear, leather is key. Minimalist ankle boots take on a military look, while high heels showcase stunning curves.
Born in 1959 in Belgium, Ann Demeulemeester studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1978 to 1981. It didn't take long for her to make her style known and establish herself as a recognised figure of the “Antwerp Six”, then considered to be the avant-garde of Belgian fashion. In 1982, she received the Canette d'Or award for promising designers, before finally launching her eponymous brand in 1986. She soon began to design footwear and accessories, too. Then, in 2005, she imagined a menswear range, and the following year, jewellery completed the collection. In 2014, Ann Demeulemeester hung up her iconic biker jacket and decided to move on from the artistic direction of her fashion label to devote herself to a new passion and create something new: porcelain.
